Firewise

Lukins Brothers Water Company is a Fire Adapted Community that is seeking Firewise status. We are your Fire Adapted Community (FAC and Firewise) leaders, which means we are involved in collaborative efforts to identify and mitigate wildfire risks in our neighborhood, Lukins Brothers Water Company’s system covers the Tahoe Valley area and some of the Tahoe Keys State Streets.

What is the Fire Adapted Community Program? This program provides a framework for community wildfire resilience. The concept came out of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy to help communities think about actions they can take to better live with wildfire. FAC helps residents engage in their community, identify partners, and understand the suite of potential actions and programs communities can do to protect themselves from wildfire. FAC works closely with community members to spearhead and support wildfire preparedness efforts in neighborhoods while helping to connect Neighborhood Leaders around the Lake Tahoe Basin.

What is Firewise USA? This program encourages local solutions for safety by involving homeowners in taking individual responsibility for preparing their homes from the risk of wildfire. Most of the property owners surrounding you are already involved in the effort!

What are the benefits of being part of a Fire Adapted Community? There are quite a few:

  • protect our properties from the risk of being destroyed by wildfire!
  • increase our safety, and the safety of our Firefighters
  • improve the health of our landscaping and surrounding forests
  • enhance the survivability of a fire by preparing for and practicing evacuation from fire
  • get to know and network with neighbors
  • possibly increase the chance of maintaining fire insurance - or in some cases - receiving rebates from insurance companies (Firewise recognition)
